چکیده

Transgenic Crops describes the basics of genetic modifi cation for agricultural purposes and a brief history of the technology and the governing policies surrounding it. This publication offers a brief overview of the main agricultural crops that have been genetically modifi ed, the characteristics they express, and the market roles they play. Unintended consequences, economic considerations, and safety concerns surrounding the cultivation and dissemination of transgenic crops are also discussed. Biopharmaceutical aspects of transgenic crops are also briefl y addressed. Economic, legal, and management concerns associated with these types of crops are addressed, as well as political and regulatory aspects. Implications of transgenic technologies for sustainable agriculture are briefl y addressed along with concluding remarks. References and resources follow the narrative.

Selectable Marker Gene Removal and Expression of Transgene by Inducible Promoter Containing FFDD Cis-Acting elements in Transgenic plants

Abstract Background: Selectable marker gene (SMG) systems are critical for generation of transgenic crops. Transgenic crop production Background: Selectable marker gene (SMG) systems are critical for generation of transgenic crops. Transgenic crop production without using SMG is not economically feasible. However, SMGs are non-essential once an intact transgenic plant has been established. Eli...

Cultivation Effect of Chitinase-Transgenic Cotton on Functional Bacteria and Fungi in Rhizosphere and Bulk Soil

Background: In consideration for the increasing widespread use of genetically modified (GM) crops, one of the important issues for assessment is the effect of GM crops on soil microbial communities Objectives: In this study, T2 chitinase-transgenic cotton (line #57) and its non-transgenic line were investigated for bacterial and fungal dynamics...

Transgenic Approaches for Development of Disease Resistance in Banana

Banana (Musa spp.) is one of the most important fruit crops in the world. India contributes around 37.2 % of total world production and is the largest producer in the world producing 28.45 million tones from an area of 0.796 million hectares with a net productivity of 35.7 MT/ha (http://faostat3.fao.org/faostatgateway/go/to/home/E; http://nhb.gov.in/area-pro/ database-2012.pdf). Compositional assessment of transgenic crops: an idea whose time has passed.

Compositional studies comparing transgenic crops with non-transgenic crops are almost universally required by governmental regulatory bodies to support the safety assessment of new transgenic crops. Here we discuss the assumptions that led to this requirement and lay out the theoretical and empirical evidence suggesting that such studies are no more necessary for evaluating the safety of transg...

Evaluation of MYB93 and MAD8 Genes in Transgenic and Non-Transgenic Rice

Increasing drought tolerance, especially in rice, which is one of the most important crops in Asia, is necessary. Transcription factors are specific sequence DNA-binding proteins that are capable of activating or suppressing transcription. These proteins regulate gene expression levels by binding to cis regulatory elements in the promoter of target genes to control various biological processes ...
